I think most readers will experience some of these same reactions, and then probably a variety of others as well. But, even in the most seemingly secured setting, nobody is safe from the satanic and sadistic ire of a deranged killer. The small-town setting also seemed to give it that wholesome appeal, one that you couldn't help but be drawn into. Without giving away anything, I think listeners will be swayed into believing what their ears are telling them, but ultimately its all a well-crafted mind-bender that will have you shaking your head at the end.
